THE FRENCH SHOOTING STAR
In 2019 Graffard shot into the limelight for good by winning two Group 1 races – with CHANEL in the Prix de Diane and WATCH ME at Royal Ascot. In Germany his success with THE REVENANT in the Badener Meile (Gr.2) made quite an impression.
Graffard trains since 2011 in Chantilly, starting off with just seven horses. He was part of the Darley Flying Start program and worked as an assistant trainer for Alain de Royer-Dupré, the principal trainer of the Aga Khan. Graffard now trains Aga Khan horses himself - and thoroughbreds for Schlenderhan, the Jürgen Winter owned Haras de la Perelle and Görlsdorf. Graffard’s passion for the sport was raised by his grandfather, the National Hunt breeder Dr Henri Champliau.

THE RISING STAR
• Trainer of the year 2018 in Germany
My parents owned race horses, this is how I got infected with the racing virus, said Henk Grewe, born 1982 in North-Rhine Westfalia. Once you have it, you can’t get away from it. This certainly rings true for Grewe. With 17 he scored his first win as an amateur rider, in 2002 he was Amateur Champion. The highlights of his professional riding career after finishing an apprenticeship with Mario Hofer were Group wins on PRINCE FLORI and OVAMBO QUEEN. But Grewe struggled with his weight and in 2011 decided to learn the training trade with Sascha Smrczek. Since 2014 he is a public trainer based in Cologne. 2018 was his year, winning 94 races home and abroad. He also started to collect stakes races with TARAJA, SKY FULL OF STARS and on the hightest Level with KHAN.

Since 2013 some Gorlsdorf racing horse are being trained by Roland Dzubasz at Hoppegarten. With his cool and individual training ideas Dzubasz is trying to improve the performance on the horses on a permanent and sustainable basis. His biggest success so far for Gorlsdorf was the Gr.2 Diana Trial win in 2016 with MEERGÖRL at Hoppegarten. Another highlight was the fourth place of SPACE COWBOY in the Frühjahrs-Preis des Bankhauses Metzeler (Gr.3) in Frankfurt 2015. The aim is to have even more Black Type success in future.

Trainer in form
Horses do make trainers. Thanks to the now seven year old Matchwinner Axel Kleinkorres has a horse in his yard who honours his name. The colt is owned by Jens Schwarma, who won 500 races in the sulky. Kleinkorres has strong connections to the trotting world, he won 400 races as a driver. For many years his home was the trotting track at Berlin-Mariendorf instead of Berlin-Hoppegarten. After two decades as a trainer Kleinkorres, born in Dinslaken, switched sides. He wanted to train thoroughbreds. He was assistant of the late Werner Baltromei and Hans-Walter Hiller, before he got his own licence in 2001. After small beginnings in Mulheim he moved to Neuss, where he trains around 30 horses. On his website is written: “You have to love your profession, to be successful.” And successful he is - 350 wins so far and counting. “My goal is it, to keep my horses healthy and strong as long as possible, so that horse and owner keep having fun in racing.”
